Example 10.7: Mainframe Replacement

For decades, mainframes, such as the IBM 360/370 series [Pugh03] were the workhorses of commercial computing. These huge, powerful execution platforms offered fast hardware, powerful operating systems, and versatile database management systems. The mainframe applications were built as monoliths , i.e., huge program structures with tightly coupled components [Hopkins11].

With the paradigm change from monoliths to client/server-architecture, then to the service-oriented architectures, and later to Web-services, these huge monoliths became unsuitable to the higher changeability requirements.

Therefore, an immense code base had to be modernized and migrated to up-to-date, distributed server farms. In many cases this also included the migration to new operating systems and databases [Hopkins11]. This was a tremendous effort for many industries and is still not completed.
